New Gar-Field Mascot
Posted on 05/04/2021

Dear Gar-Field Families and Community,

I am writing today to announce the finalists for Gar-Field High School’s new mascot effective for the 21-22 school year. This process began several weeks ago with open submissions of suggestions from students, staff, alumni, and community members. There were nearly 400 submissions that were submitted to the Mascot Selection Committee for consideration. The selection committee, representing Gar-Field’s stakeholder groups, identified 4 finalist submissions for the community preference survey. I would like to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to the committee members listed below who gave time and energy to seek feedback from their respective stakeholder groups.

  • Jason Bell (Teacher, Coach, Class of '94 graduate)
  • Amanda Cahow (Teacher, Coach, Class of '14 graduate)
  • Teresa Kitchen (Teacher, Class of '80 graduate)
  • Michael Meadows (Teacher, Former Coach, Class of '82 graduate)
  • Chevelli Smith (Assistant Principal, Class of '91 graduate)
  • Carmen Lotito (Alumni, Class of '78 graduate)
  • Danny Bushey (Parent, Booster, Class of '94 graduate)
  • Roger Dallek (Principal, 1987-2007)
  • Mike Payne (Director of Student Activities)
  • Student Representatives from SCA, SALC, and each class council

In addition to identifying these finalists, the committee also discussed the importance of maintaining important aspects of Gar-Field’s identity. Regardless of the outcome of the community preference survey, Gar-Field High School will maintain our school colors, the “School of Champions” motto, and the use of the “Big Red” theme with the new mascot. Below the finalist options are listed, each with a few important considerations and sample logo designs:

Mascot finalists: Red Wolves, Red Hawks, Phoenix, Griffins

The next step in the selection process is a community preference survey. The preference survey will be open through Tuesday, May 11th.  There are separate survey links for staff, students, and community members. To participate in the survey, please click on the appropriate link below:

I encourage all members of the Gar-Field School Community to participate in the survey as we look to select a mascot that reflects our community values and identity. Thank you again to our committee members for their thoughtful deliberation and consideration in determining these finalists. I look forward to announcing the final selection in the near future and to an exciting 21-22 school year!
